year of mercy

When God comes, he always calls us out of our house. We are visited so that we can visit others; we are encountered so as to encounter others; we receive love in order to give love.
— Pope Francis

What is Youth Ministry?

Catholic youth ministry is the response of the Christian Community to the needs of young people and the sharing of the unique gifts of youth with the larger community. Catholic youth ministry is not limited to participation in a particular program or having a youth group; youth ministry is the relationship young people have with the Church.

All ministry with adolescents must be directed toward presenting young people with the Good News of Jesus Christ and inviting them and challenging them to become his disciples. For this reason, catechesis is an essential component of youth ministry and one that needs renewed emphasis. (Renewing the Vision)

“Youth must not simply be considered as an object of pastoral concern for the Church; in fact, young people are and ought to be encouraged to be active on behalf of the Church as leading characters in evangelization and participants in the renewal of society.” St. John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles Laici no 46 (1988)

Three goals of Catholic Youth Ministry

  1. Empowerment: to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today.
  2. Participation: to draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community.
  3. Growth: to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. (Renewing the Vision)
