Lifelong Formation

“The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity.” (Catechesi Tradendae)

Journey

The Journey of the Catechist is a continuous cycle of answering, witnessing and inspiring the call. We begin our journey in the womb of our mother Church, through the waters of Baptism. Here, we are joined to Christ and share in His mission. God begins to call us by name.

Answering the Call

We Catechists, in some point of our journey, have said “Yes” to God. It’s the same ‘yes’ that has been echoed through generations of holy men and women in our Church.

Witnessing the Call

Answering the Call of the Catechist is a privilege because it means we have been invited to participate in God’s great plan of building His Kingdom. The more we learn. The more we witness.

Inspiring the Call

We spark interest and curiosity in others as our lives give witness to living the Gospel. Inspiring others is like sowing the seeds that one day will bear fruit.

The Catechist Journey

These phases of answering, witnessing and inspiring the call in the catechist journey must be a never ending cycle. Archbishop Blase Cupich alongside the Office of Lifelong Formation are fully committed to helping every catechist in each phase of this journey.

Lifelong Faith Formation

The Certification of catechists and Catholic school teachers has been a standard of best practices in the Archdiocese for years. We are grateful to the thousands of faithful in every parish, who have chosen to dedicate themselves to become certified catechists.

In recent years, we have received requests from pastors, catechetical leaders, catechists and teachers to revisit our certification process through the lens of lifelong formation. The current scope of achieving certification appears fragmented in relationship to Church teachings calling for ongoing and lifelong formation. Since August, the Office of Lifelong Formation has been working diligently to establish a new standard of formation and certification. We began this project by outreach to pastors, catechetical leaders, catechists, and Catholic school teachers.

Feedback from more than 700 people including priests, catechetical leaders, catechists and school teachers in our six vicariates have identified the following areas in need of improvement:

  • Accessibility – We have identified a need for more course offerings at increased numbers of parishes throughout the Archdiocese.
  • Flexibility – Students having difficulty completing missed classes was commonplace.
  • Basic Requirements – Many experienced a challenge to complete 50 hours of classroom instruction for certification due to work and family commitments.
  • Uniformity – The quality of instruction varied considerably across the archdiocese.
  • High cost – Fees for certification of $500 per Catholic school teacher and approximately $225 per catechist, calls for more affordable costs.

Forming and certifying catechists and Catholic school teachers is a necessary responsibility for passing on the faith. Our commitment to the pedagogy of God, to further the Kingdom calls for faith-filled, knowledgeable, well-formed catechists and Catholic school teachers. Our aim is to achieve the best possible solutions for formation and certification.

Having taken the feedback received to heart and mind, the Office of Lifelong Formation and the Office of Catholic Schools have contracted My Catholic Faith Delivered to offer convenience, affordability, flexibility and uniformity through online formation and certification course offerings in English and Spanish. We piloted this project in early 2016 with around 100 committed participants. This is an exciting time of time of growth and opportunity in the service of Jesus Christ. We are graced to be working collaboratively with you. Thank you for your dedication to the catechetical ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago.
